Harvesting Cognitive Dissonance

 Go Along

Comical acts online or on TV, invariably comes along with an abundant dose of ‘canned laughter [1]’. We might miss the joke but not the laughter. Sooner than later, we too tend to laugh along; even when we don't quite get the joke. Our compulsion to go along is more pronounced when there are people around!

WhatsApp group discussions play it out best. Anyone could have initiated it but inevitably, it gravitates to align with the opinion of an individual or a group of individuals. Initially there could be many widely differing views; strong, loud and clear. As discussions progress, differing voices either fall in line, or just fade into silence. Views that differ from the majoritarian are gradually given up, willfully or under pressure. It is not always necessary for the majoritarian opinion to be correct legal or valid, yet everyone goes along! Don't believe it ?

Revisit previous discussions on your mobile; it could provide undeniable proof! You can easily identify the dominant ones, the dormant mutes and the browbeaten. Eventually everyone tends to go along; to be in the group.

Two seemingly isolated events but connected by a profound human compulsion called cognitive dissonance; the compelling desire to be with the dominant majority!

Do We Always Go Along

When our thoughts run contrary to the one predominantly held there is a sense of discomfort within us and we are driven to address it. The easiest way is to align oneself with the majority in view. Individuals to start with, homes, society and even Nation States are not exempted from this behavioral aspect. The degree and intensity of the dissonance experienced differs from person to person. More rooted one is to one’s belief, higher is the intensity of discomfort. If the dissonance has existential risk attached, likelihood of ‘going along’ is stronger.  After all North Koreans adore their leader!

What happens when there is no existential threat?

Conscience versus Pragmatism

Mob lynching has become a common occurrence in many places. Individually nobody likes to kill or be killed. But seldom do we find anyone from within trying to prevent the mob from lynching the hapless. At least momentarily conscience of each individual in the mob goes dead.

Many a time, people tend to go along even when they know, what they're going along with, may not be right. The discord within one’s conscience is often drowned in rudimentary survival need of being part of a group; the predominant human trait that helped us survive the wild, create societies and nation states and even wage wars against one another! Deeply imprinted into our genes, as an acquired  trait and perfected in the course of one's life, giving in to the majoritarian view guarantee us our place in the group and provides a sense of protection irrespective of what we hold as right or wrong. After all; it is more important to be alive to fight another day for another cause that may be more important to us: though that day may never come! In the choice between living by one’s conscience and being alive, spine gives way to survival instincts.

The debate necessarily need not be on survival issues. Yet; it is it easier to be part of a group even though one knows that the group’s view or decision is wrong. It is our innate quality that draws us closer to the group even against the call of our conscience, justifying the unjustifiable. Those who stand firm by their conscience are either expelled from the group or forced to get out. They either perish in solitude or emerge separately creating groups that hold another set of views seemingly driven by their conscience. This is the path seldom trodden.

Understanding Majority

Majority may not necessarily be defined in numerical sense always. One strong man can create a majority being the nucleus. Others, join for selfish reasons and the bulk, is made up of people often referred to as silent majority. They are there for fear of being seen holding contrary views. They easily shift to another power center when the wind blows that way.

Driven by incompetence to voice, impotence to stand up and be heard, they are easily afflicted by cognitive dissonance. Organisations, associations and such bodies are infested with such people; certainly selfish and often scheming.

Can Cognitive dissonance be productively channeled?

The Mantra for Corporates

Getting teams to deliver and meet deadlines is one aspect that every organization wants. While diversity in skills, domain expertise and opinions add to the quality of options generated, success depends on convergence of thoughts post decision on the way forward and unity in action thereafter. Cognitive dissonance can be ‘managed’ effectively without impinging on individual’s esteem and eroding his skill set and willingness to deploy it. If such a conducive climate is created it can help the organisation reap rich.

    1. Thank you very much .
Though behaviour of some may not be very good to talk about or cannot be forgiven or forgotten, the theory and psychology behind such behaviour patterns, nevertheless is interesting at least as a subject of study.

  2. Very well articulated. Knowingly or unknowingly many politicians adopt this method to quell the cognitive dissonance of the mass

Politics is the art of The impossible and politicians know how well the impossible can be promised and how easily possible it is to remain not even remotely accountable.
it is the polity that pays high to remain dirt

  3. Taking advantage of the gullibility of a person. Can we call it brainwashing ?? lack of awareness is one reason hence education matters. Can we relate cognitive dissonance as a tool used by counsellors ,psychologists and psychiatrists for treatments? If yes, thats a positive use.

The term "gullibility " attributes or grants certain amount of helplessness or ignorance to the one who is at the receiving end or becoming the subject of thuggery.

Cognitive dissonance is a well thought out strategy of a person to overcome inconsistencies or even questions that involve morality or conscience.
It is an effective strategy to come out of a dilemma and it involves taking sides with the majority view.
Therefore it can hardly be called brainwashing.
      It is beyond survival.
It's about finding space in a society or group or remaining relevant.

  4. One of the Pivotal  HR subjects that determine an organization's ascent and descent. As you have rightly pointed out its ramification is felt in our social, cultural, political, and religious space. A biased view or evaluation hatches this view to a more significant extent.

  6. It is an interesting subject as to how we should behave with others especially, when we are the part of the general community. Congratulations. Keep it up.

  7. Monkeys do what other monkies do. In any hierarchical organisation, this tendency is rampant. Where there is dissonance, critical thinkers and analysts emerge. This is the success mantra seen in Canada, USA and Israel. That is why any worthwhile Indian youngster wants to emigrate to these countries. That is also the reason why there are Emigration counters in Indian airports and Immigration counters in Canadian/
    US airports!!

    1. Thank you very much. Critical thinking has not been monopolised or geographically localized or restricted ever . It well may never ever be. Going with the majority is a human tendency inherited by us all and tempered by conditions that we grow up in. However some of us do think differently and act according to our conscience. It's a great feat that needs lots of spine and much more of heart. Immigration or emigration is a matter of choice. It's based on decision to seek better pastures . To say that anyone who has migrated has attained escape velocity from cognitive dissonance will be far fetched to say the least.

  8. Dear Sir,

    Many Kudos to you.

You have spoken the heart out of many a silent majority who suffer the “Go Along” due to very aptly brought out reasons of safety, security, survival instincts and largely to avoid confrontation and displeasure of few or may be a majority.

Mob lynchings are absolutely inhuman and worse than barbaric, yet no accountability is fixed and mobs go scot free. Therefore, it has encouraged the unscrupulous groups to safely resort to such acts repeatedly. The law is blind and the law enforcement agencies are not just blind but deaf and dumb too. At least they act like. The silent majority is culpable for not raising their voices.

The silent majority living with cognitive dissonance live like dead men walking. Their souls long dead and bodies in existence.

For any righteous man, cognitive dissonance, may be the only option, still means just existence not life.

With every passing day life is becoming more mechanical existence than living a full life as designed by nature and the Almighty.

The very purpose of humans as social beings and formation of society is defeated to a large extent when we are forced to live in/ with cognitive dissonance.

You have divine blessings and a pure mind. Your contribution to the mankind is substantial.

Thank you so much for valuable articles.

    Regards

    1. You have knack of picking interesting issues. The issue of cognitive dissonance is all pervading and can be experienced by all irrespective of age . At school it is called bullying where weaker students fall in line for survival. It takes different form in social media platforms.
Extremely well articulated. Look fwd to more from you

    2. Thank you very much. we can correlate dissonance and its real-life manifestations in myriad ways. Falling in line, everybody does!! That's how we have survived, 'collaborating' as a close knit group , society, nation states , regions and finally as species. Classic example was COVID! Everyone knew of it, many doubted the need for vaccine since it was NOT proven! BUT everyone got shot with it. collaboration in the hope of survival when clearly it was proven, that it doesn't prevent , mitigate or even save you!!
For all the vehement denials, we still do, consciously or sub-consciously.

  9. Not completely true .. variety of thoughts and opinion to one particular situation was is n will be always exist . A what’s app group conversation or mob mentality doesn’t decide for all . There are very many examples in our day to day where we don’t subscribe with the opinions of few.

    1. Thank you for the differently held view. i have NOT ever refuted the existence of differed thoughts! { " variety of thoughts and opinion to one particular situation was is n will be always exist"}. The issue is when we suppress the 'difference' in 'deference' to the majoritarian view, even when we DO NOT SUBSRIBE TO IT. The question is
      1. What do we do when we differ?
      2. How long do we carry on the difference?
its when people carry beyond the threshold commonly known to humans, we become Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Lincoln etc.
Till then we , at least most of us, dilute our differences in deference!!
      YOU ARE FREE TO DIFFER.

  10. Very good article Sir,
The general public rarely realise while passing through this phenomena. In my opinion the 'go along' aspect really exists . It evolves out of the fact that human being is a social animal and so he needs the company of others, he never wants to get isolated.
