CORONA TIMES AND INVADING CORPORATES


Silent Take-over?

Ever since 2020 dawned, world has been compulsively riveted to ‘covidian’ statistics - the infected, recovered and dead. Incidents of heroism, sacrifice and stupidity add realism and uncertainty to the emerging survival story. In its attempt to contain the pandemic through social distancing, the world locked itself down. To survive with minimal damages, organisations, that could remotely pursue business, took the ‘Work-From-Home’ (WFH) route, effectively taking over homes.  WFH keeps hopes alive but could soon be the new norm.

Irresistible Goldmine

Irritable domestic disruptions notwithstanding, internet generally ensured seamless connectivity helping entities overcome restricted work-related movement, imposed by lock-down. Though organisations, especially production places mandating physical presence, reported loss of business, many where work could progress without such presence reported higher productivity. For many, especially IT related, it was ‘almost’ business-as-usual even with skeletal staffing. In addition to the unexpected savings in real estate and logistics costs, ‘lock-down’ provided, it also seems to have helped companies discover an irresistible goldmine - 24x7 willing WFH employees with their own real estate at no extra costs. This could trigger a ‘post-lockdown’ review of HR assets, pruning of rolls and redeployment of residual resources. Markets can also expect new paradigms in talent acquisitions and retention.

Spin-off and Trade-off

If crude oil price  is an indicator, world economy is in a tail spin and businesses will be devastated. In the ensuing bloodbath, companies will resort to drastic measures to stay afloat. Unprecedented unemployment would be the first manifestation. Sensing looming pink-slips, employees have become more productive during WFH, than ever before. If 24X7 captive workers and real estate savings are the beneficial spin-offs for organisations, employees could find themselves ending up in an unhealthy trade-off, surrendering personal life for job security. Fixed and flexi-timings could soon become ancient practices, as employees could find themselves tied to ‘any time’ schedules. Secure high-speed network and domestic workstation could soon become mandatory requirement for being hired. Once hired, bosses, colleagues and subordinates can virtually walk into the privacy of each other’s homes. Corporate invasion of private space would be complete. 

Sub-optimal Output 

Organisational activities are possible 24 X7. Application of individual’s physical and mental abilities without break, however sincere it may be, yields sub-optimal results. Shift systems and time limits were introduced to overcome this efficiency drop. Somehow, higher management, assuming indispensability, seems to have excluded itself from such consideration. Middle level follows suit and lower rungs relentlessly replicate rituals to remain relevant. 

Considering oneself superhuman to command astronomical compensations and accelerated career progression is acceptable. But everyone around is unfortunately bound by laws that define mortals. Fatigue is undeniably human and law of diminishing returns universally applicable. While ensuing uncertainty may keep employees endlessly logged in and force them to attend calls, apparently pleased, it will be naive to think that charades could be productive in the long run.

Organisations resorting to such practices, by design or inadvertently, is exploitative and not worth working for. Worthy assets would flee sooner or later for better pastures.


Work Space

“Work is worship”, the often-quoted proverb, lends sanctity to workplaces. Interpersonal work relationships are best developed at the workplace, uniform and insulated from home conditions. Differentials in work conditions, if any, are motivators. Time together, as a team helps develop bonding and unity of purpose, indispensable elements in evolving productive organisational culture. Despite reckonable short-term savings, WFH essentially erodes workplace dynamics and in the long run be injurious to the organisation.


Home – Nursery for Value Systems

Home is where employees recuperate between work shifts. It is where employee goes to return recharged for productivity. That is why great organisations go to great lengths to make family lives of their employees meaningful.

Homes, like workplaces, too have distinctive and sanctified identity. Irrespective of the locality, size and comfort levels, home is where values systems are sown. It is where customs, traditions and culture are nurtured. Tinkering with ‘home-atmosphere’ by inducing office into the four walls of the house has serious implications with unbearable future costs for the society. Such infringements can alter the way, children, the future generation, is raised. Adverse impact of parental absence from children is well documented. Bringing offices home, may physically place parents at home longer but effectively and perpetually steal parents from children.


Costs of Infringement

Managements are not legally responsible for creating well-balanced, just and productive society. But they certainly have an important role. Compensation to the employee is only a peripheral act of society building. Organisations may do well to remind itself that the very same children whose development they consciously impair today would either be their potential employees or clients. Companies must understand that businesses thrive most in just and happy societies.


Defining Paradigms

If businesses plan to continue with WFH, then there is a need to define parameters of the proposed paradigm, clearly enunciating socially acceptable terms of engagement. Individuals may be willing to compromise long-term societal needs out of sheer greedy ignorance, but organisations can ill afford to remain oblivious to societal needs.

Intention makes the difference.

  3. As usual very thought provoking. Many companies would probably use the extended lockdown period to complete the trails on this new work envoirnment and finally decide on this as a good option to implement for reasons more than one that you have detailed.However, to me its a frightening prospect with this 24×7 work schedule doing more harm than good to the work force at all levels. The biggest casuality no doubt will be the disruptions it will cause to the family set up at the domestic level.I already see this in the sudden change of lifestyle in the case of my son and his wife both of whom hold fairly high corporate postions and their three year old son.Tempers are frayed due to constant demand for attention from the little fellow and the wife complaing that she hardly gets anytime to talk with her husband. There are no solutions to this. Perhaps the only one is to leave your work behind in the office at the end of the day.

    1. society is set to change in many ways post covid. at least for a few days.
      the way we work and live will undergo changes.
      staying together in the same space working has rewritten rules of business at home. Home is NO more just home. its a phenomenal change in nature of the institution we knew as home. May be we will get used to the new definition very soon. children will also get used to it.

    1. Definitely the culture of working from home is a phenomena which has taken some shape since the pandemic started. It will have widespread ramifications in the corporate sector as well as the outlook towards productive work.
    2. Once the ominous clouds of the pandemic start wearing off the first big challenge will be gross unemployment. This factor will be a game changer as far as the IT and the corporate sector is concerned. This however, will have to take into account the security aspects basically security of info.

    3. The next area where this could be used productively is the education field wherein children right from a nascent stage will get used to this concept. The irritating homework can be done at own time with WFH. This however, will have its limitations to places which are not so well connected.
    4. This concept will have a grt deal of accountability and your daily prog can be seen and evaluated. People now can't bluff their way through.
    5. Yes it would trigger off a cultural revolution wherein everybody would be under scrutiny 24x7.

    Thanx and regards sir. Just some random thoughts which spontaneously came to mind. There would be scores of other spin offs as well as shortcomings to this culture.

      We are in the midst of a great'Mandhan', the mystical churning. We need to identify the Amrit and grab it but at the same time address the Poison that is about to spill out soon.
      poison can manifest in many ways. with unemployment, mass unsettled labour, and communal polarization we may be sitting on powder keg. The art of administration is to wean the poison away as fast possible and discard as far as possible.

    Some of us already know 24x7 schedule, inadvertently. This COVID situation just made it worse.

    Hope your well meaning and timely advice finds many takers and saves the employees of the day and future.

    You have been doing yeomen service to the humanity at large through your articles on various aspects of life, society, work and the delicate balance between them.

    Your articles are a product of in depth knowledge, vast experience, keen observation and diligent application. It’s a treat to read them. Your eloquence makes a distinct impact.     1. I am honoured sir. i do spend a lot of time researching , and analysing things before i put it down to words.
      i dont know if people, other than to whom i send the link, get to read me. so scope of service to humanity is pretty limited. i hope sometime, someone will read and pick up something worthy.

  8. Nice article, however, there are pros and cons of everything. I am sharing my (completely)personal views.

    less traffic congestion, reduction in electricity bills for the organization, lesser pollution, few accidental deaths,more productivity of the employees .... seems okay. But what about the other side of the coin? What about the employment of Drivers who have either bought an SUV or driving cars of individual? Well, you can justify they can join OLA/UBER etc. Even then, not everybody can join them. there are many of this kinds. Secondly, the physical boundry between office time and the leisure time is omitted ( you can argue about flexi timings). Is that expected? The IT based organizations can do it, and are already doing it. Many consultancy organizations in NCR are practicing for a long time. But many service sectors, which need physical interaction. They would continue to work in the usual way. How easy would be balancing, that needs to be seen. I found it very difficult during the lockdown period.

      i agree with you. the lock down is going to impact employment to a large extent. see the way it has struck the oil barrel in one shot. all storage capacities are full to the brim and tankers either idle or not finding place to unload. Economy will take a hit.
      but to my mind briefly.
      human brains are pretty fertile. we will come up with much more ingenious ways of generating opportunities. imagine the speculative trade of futures is a crazy world that actually prompts hoarding and artificial scarcity!
      yes. it will take some time.
      whatever said and done, some services will need physical interaction.
      that will retain sanity and sanctity of human relationships.

  10. Work from home ,was an option which everyone wanted to adopt in normal situation,but was never accepted easily . People who could Wfh,were considered the best of the lot or maybe employers favorite ,not realizing that one day due to Covid 19 , everyone will become everybody's favorite and would be given a chance by default .Not only this, it would be an easy way to check into ones paradise .So no more being biased or favoritism here ,it's just a matter of chance.School going children ,were extremely happy with this change ,as they expected not to be overburdened ,but look what Covid 19 ,had in store for the poor souls ,School from home ,which gave them made-up excitement ,those online classes where no one could even think of taking an off ,just more burden without being physically present .Ahhhh ...what a life !!! Should it be considered a long term plan or just a testing phase ???

    You came out with a very interesting perspective.
    The emotion that runs through the comment is all about work place dynamics.
    Favouritism on some ground or other existed in all fields, inter personal relationships, why even intra-personal decisions.
    BUT, by being physically present at the office, one knew where one stood at the queue for bosses benevolence. One could also take appropriate actions to get one's due. May be, at least attempt to.
    In this case one will NOT even come to know!!!
    Only to be left in the bliss of glorious uncertainty.

    As of now working from home is / or seem like being in paradise.
    The new found freedom from formals and controlled atmosphere of an office could be tempting.

    But would that not be violating the characteristics of home?

    Even those, like lawyers and doctors etc, who used to operate out of homes earlier had a separate room at home for their work. They partitioned the house into two -office and home - effectively insulating one from the other.

    May be one wants to be away from home for work and then yearn to get back to the comfort of one's den at the end of the day. WFH takes that away too!

    Schooling,
    Ask working mothers with small children.
    The online schooling schedule has burdened them to no end.
    For small kids its fun time. For adolescents it may be nothing short of restriction / imprisonment.
    But children irrespective of would lose out the most important part of growing up and social integration.
    After all schooling is far beyond text books.
    Imagine what would be left of life without the time we spend in school! I wasn't very good at studies nor a great student. But the best lessons of life came from the school and college campus. I will love to be back through the good, bad and ugly of both my schools and my college campuses.

    We all have different perspectives. Yours is refreshingly different and admirable.

  12. This article reflects an unique thought and perspective for the current situation. I fully agree and many individuals and corporates have not thought through on the long run implications. All are struggling to meet the current business challenges and requirements. While one would agree that there is going to be a transformational change on how employees would continue to work from home it would be extremely important for organisations to put across a decent work from home discipline. Ultimately it is a give and take for everyone to succeed. Many non performing employees will get exposed in the whole process and the others will complain about long unusual working hours.

    1. While i was in the process of scripting this article and even when i published this, WFH was seen by many as a stop gap arrangement. In my previous article i had argued that WFH is here to stay and be pursued. Just saw the news that WFH would be a company policy for many now.

      The issues i highlighted and above all the need to draw up the boundaries to WFH becomes very urgent and compelling.

      Each new paradigm has its own defining characteristics. WFH should get defined soon

  13. This article is a true reflection of our thoughts.WFH,I feel is just a stop gap arrangement.After all,Man is a social animal. It is extremely important for us to go out,meet people....human connect is so important for a healthy lifestyle.
